The Grass is Always Greener

Just as farm animals prefer to eat grass on the other side of the fence, people tend to pass attractive travel options in their back yards as they seek entertainment and recreation in far away places. It is human nature's folly and requires concentration to overcome.

Take as an example the Theatre for Young Audiences programs in The Round Barn Theatre at Amish Acres in Nappanee. Elementary and middle schools have been making annual pilgrimages from schools in Fort Wayne, Valparaiso, Berrien Springs, Michigan, Gary, Lafayette and beyond; but often these yellow buses pass similar yellow buses from Nappanee's surrounding community schools seeking curriculum based performing arts in Indianapolis, Kalamazoo, Chicago and Merrillville.

The same buses pass again as schools closer to Amish Acres hit the highways for fall field trips by investing energy, figuratively and literally, in visiting Conner Prairie in Indianapolis, Souder Village in Archibald, Ohio, Bear Creek Farms in Decatur, and Science Central in Fort Wayne. If conserving fuel costs is becoming a deciding factor in your field trip decisions, consider the short drive to Nappanee as an alternative to these complementary attractions. Many teachers and administrators are learning that equally educational and historical experiences are making lasting impressions on young students every day in their own backyard. So consider coming close to home and you'll still be far away.
