Pirates Of Penzance
Review, Jeri
Seeley, The Paper
Review, Karen Rallo, South Bend Tribune
The Pirates of Penzance tells the story of a young pirate
apprentice named Frederic who has come to the end of his indentured
period. As it turns out, Frederic was indentured by mistake. His half-deaf
nurse had been instructed to apprentice him to a "pilot" but
got it a little wrong. At any rate, Frederic has decided to leave the
pirate life forever and, though he loves his comrades dearly, devote
his life to the extermination of their kind. However, since he is until
the stroke of midnight still one of them, he feels obliged to point
out the pirates' weakness--they are too softhearted. Apparently, all
a captive must do is plead to being an orphan and he is immediately
released!
The
Pirates of Penzanceopened at the Fifth Avenue Theatre in New
York on December 31, 1879 following on the heels of their wildly
successful H.M.S. Pinafore. A major Broadway revival featuring Kevin
Kline (Pirate King), Rex Smith (Frederic), and Linda Ronstadt (Mabel)
opened at the Uris Theatre on January 8, 1981 and ran for 772 performances.
A 1983 film version featured Kline, Smith, Ronstadt, and Angela Lansbury.

A Note from the Director…
Looking
back through the history books, The Pirates of Penzance marks
quite a few firsts. Musical theatre as we know it traces its roots
back to opera through operetta and comic opera.
Gilbert was the first lyricist to be billed before a composer. And
the show itself was the first and only Gilbert and Sullivan to premiere
in America. Our production is no different. This is the first time
an operetta has been done in The Round Barn Theatre. This is the first
time operetta for several of the cast members. For some, it is the
first time even being exposed to the world of operetta.
For me, this is the first show I have directed at The Round Barn Theatre and I am thrilled and honored. Whether you are a regular visitor of the opera or this is a first for you as well, there is something for everyone in this show. So hop aboard the pirate ship with a rollicking band of fun loving pirates, as these eccentric characters take you on a journey of high adventure, first loves, and show you the true meaning of the word “duty”. I hope you enjoy the show as much as we enjoy putting it on for you! Thank you supporting the arts and please continue to support all that happens here at Amish Acres and The Round Barn Theatre.
