"Coming of Age" is a relative thing; we all experience it, and we’ve chosen 21 as the symbol of this part of life’s journey.Because The Round Barn Theatre has been presenting repertory theatre for 21 years,we’ve chosen to design our season around shows that are Coming of Age stories of love and discovery.

From the first date to marriage and beyond in I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change to Elle Woods turning blonde into a legal eagle in Legally Blonde,to Katie Yoder and Peter Reber’s long sought love in Plain and Fancy.Throw in Sister Deloris finding her voice in the chapel choir in Sister Act, and Sarah Brown attempting to save sinners in our revival of Guys and Dolls, and you have a recipe for magic! The Mousetrap came of age when it opened in the West End of London in 1952, and has been running continuously ever since. It has by far the longest initial run of any play in history, with its 25,000th performance taking place in 2012. And for the holidays, Disney's The Little Mermaid's arises from the sea to find her true love on land. The season runs from April 12th through December 31st and will include nearly 400 performances, typically in six week runs, making it the busiest stage in Indiana. The popular Second Stage productions will return withThe Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged). The usual complement of Theatre for Young Audience productions and summer acting camps, will round out the 2017 season.

The Round Barn Theatre's stage is dedicated to Joseph Stein, who co-wrote the book for Plain and Fancy, which was the first new musical to hit Broadway in 1955. It ran for 462 performances. Now after thirty years, The Round Barn Theatre's perennial production has surpassed 3,600 performances being seen by over 355,000 patrons.

I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change is a musical comedy with book and lyrics by Joe DiPietro and music by Jimmy Roberts. With 5,000 performances, it is the second-longest running Off Broadway musical. It is presented in the form of a series of vignettes connected by the central theme of love and relationships. This celebration of the mating game takes on the truths and myths behind that contemporary conundrum known as "the relationship". This hilarious revue pays tribute to those who have loved and lost, to those who have fallen on their face at the portal of romance, to those who have dared to ask, "Say, what are you doing Saturday night?"

A New Yorker and his sophisticated girlfriend drive down around Lancaster, Pennsylvania, to sell a piece of property. Here they meet Amish folk, whose convoluted English speech, clothes and habits haven't changed for centuries. Legally Blonde tells the story of Elle Woods, a sorority girl who enrolls at Harvard Law School to win back her ex-boyfriend Warner. She discovers how her knowledge of the law can help others, and successfully defends exercise queen Brooke Wyndham in a murder trial. It received seven Tony nominations, ten Drama Desk nominations, and won three Laurence Olivier Awards, including the Best New Musical award. “Omigod You Guys,” “Legally Blonde,” and “Daughter of Delta Nu” introduce new songs that are the spirit of the “can do show.”

Guys and Dolls is a musical based on short stories by Damon Runyon. The band members of the Save-a-Soul Mission, led by the pious and beautiful Sergeant Sarah Brown, call for sinners to "Follow the Fold" and repent. Petty gambler Nathan Detroit, runs an illegal floating crap game. Detroit enters into a bet with Sky Masterson in the hopes of continuing his game “under” the law. “A Bushel and a Peck,” “If I Were a Bell,” and “Sit Down, You’re Rockin’ the Boat” are all-time musical theatre standards that are always hard to get out of your head. Sister Act is Broadway’s smash musical comedy based on the 1992 blockbuster movie starring Whoopi Goldberg. The Mousetrap is a murder mystery play by Agatha Christie. It opened in the West End of London in 1952, and has been running continuously since then. It has by far the longest initial run of any play in history, with its 25,000th performance taking place on 18 November 2012. The play is known for its twist ending, which the audience is traditionally asked not to reveal after leaving the theatre.

The Second Stage is located in the Locke Township Meeting House down the hall from The Round Barn Theatre. The vision of the Second Stage is to bring theatrical works to the Round Barn audience in an intimate environment, stripped down to the essentials, in order to focus on the acting and writing of each author's work.

Plain Paper: Amish News That's Print to Fit

The saga continues. The musical “Plain Paper: Amish News That’s Print to Fit” will be presented Sundays September 10 & 17 at 6:00 PM, at the Locke Township Meeting House, the second stage adjacent to The Round Barn Theatre at Amish Acres. In lieu of an admission charge donations will be collected for Family Christian Development Center of Nappanee.

When the Director and Gal Friday of a small television production company arrive in Nappanee to make a reality show “exposing” the truth about the local Amish community, they discover that despite the struggles facing mainstream newspapers nationwide with regards to declining circulation, printer Martin Zook cannot keep up with the demand for his weekly Amish newspaper, “The Vision.”

The show was conceived by Round Barn Executive Producer Richard Pletcher, who asked himself: In an era where print media struggles -- some say it is dying -- why do several well-known Amish weekly newspapers published from Indiana to Pennsylvania and Ohio to Ontario thrive? What does this say about the permanence of Amish culture, and what does it say about the larger American society as well?

In 2014 Pletcher shared these questions with his friend Frank Ramirez, who had recently moved back to resettle in Elkhart County as the Senior Pastor of the Union Center Church of the Brethren. The two considered exploring the answers together through a play which has now become a musical. Ramirez in turn contacted his writing partner, composer Steve Engle of Alexandria, Pennsylvania, which whom he had co-authored four other musicals. More...
